History of the Island
Open Habitat began its life as part of a JISC funded Oxford University programme for exploring Multi User Virtual Reality Environments (MUVEs) for educational purposes. A full report on findings and further details about the original island can be found here: http://www.openhabitat.org
The Present
Open Habitat seeks to create a constructive environment in which we can explore and deepen our understanding of ourselves and the universe, through the application of reason, exposure to the sciences, art, philosophy and critical thinking, based on the principle of mutual respect.
Virtual Environments / Immersive Education
By effectively exploiting the unique qualities that virtual realities, such as Second Life, offer for creating interesting educational experiences and bringing people and information together in ways that are difficult or impossible in other modes.
